17 Stunning (and Unique) Ways Events Have Immersed Guests in Nature

These innovative event designs used natural settings and elements to transport guests to breathtakingly beautiful environments—both indoors and out.

Stepping into nature offers a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively. While flowers, greenery, and other natural elements are common fixtures at events, sometimes designers elevate these elements to extraordinary heights. Imagine stepping beneath a canopy of intertwining leaves (without leaving a hotel ballroom), or wandering through dreamy flower-lined tunnels, or dining at a table set directly in a flowing creek. These are just a few of the awe-inspiring setups BizBash has spotlighted over the years. Here, we're revisiting some stunning events where guests were not just surrounded by nature—they were part of it.

Plant-based skincare brand Origins and California grocery chain Erewhon brought their partnership to life through a gardenlike oasis in Los Angeles in September 2023. The invite-only affair centered on a bespoke, botanical-based brunch that nodded to Erewhon and Origins' emphasis on the benefits of veggies and herbs through an immersive, greenery-filled environment.

Jordanian fashion designer Nafsika Skourti took the concept of dining alfresco to a new level in 2019, thanks to her art installation-slash-temporary venue called “The Invisible Room.” Her goal was to create an invisible structure in the midst of Wadi Rum, Jordan's natural landscape—one that was only discernible when it was illuminated.

In May 2024, Genesis House hosted 'BLOOMTANICA,' an exhibition by floral artist Jeff Leatham. The surreal world featured IRL installations combined with digital components, exploring the relationship between nature and technology. Each floor was a multidimensional, sensory experience—from the cascading displays in the showroom to the winding mirrored columns and LED experience in The Cellar Stage, the venue’s event space. Hues of deep purple, lavender, and plum, complemented by bright orange accents, drew inspiration from both Leatham’s signature Vanda orchid and the Korean night sky. The Watermill Center’s 2014 benefit in New York had a series of fairy tale-inspired art installations. As the centerpiece of the entrance, Annick Lavallée-Benny's 'N.U.A.G.E.S.' was an imposing fixture constructed from wood, chicken wire, cotton batting, poly fill, and fishing line. The conception of clouds was inspired by the magical flying carpets that were featured throughout the benefit's 'One Thousand Nights and One Night: Sleeping Nights of Scheherazade' theme.

The February 2024 premiere event for FX’s Shōgun took place at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, where designer and producer Event Eleven aimed to immerse guests in Japan in the year 1600. When guests first arrived, they encountered an immersive forest that had been built in the Academy Museum's exterior terrace—a space that's typically a raw, blank canvas. Guests entered the event through the lush forest setting, where they encountered original costumes from the show. The series' score was playing through hidden speakers to further the immersive feel.

For Atlanta Pride's 2023 kickoff event, organizers wanted to make a splash. Designed by YES Event Designs, the gathering at the Georgia Aquarium immersed guests in a vibrant, fantasy-like environment that offered a futuristic take on an under-the-sea theme. While under-the-sea themes have long been popular, the team drew inspiration from unexpected places, like scenes from the Avatar movie and the ocean's bioluminescence. In a lounge area, crystal curtains were meant to look like ocean water; overhead were iridescent bubble orbs, eye-catching crystals that caught light like a silver jack fish, and custom wave drapes to mimic the sea and illuminate an ever-changing jellyfish. At Money20/20 Europe, held in Amsterdam in June 2024, the Na.i.ture Stage was originally conceived with a tree canopy to provide shade from the glass ceiling. The nature theme was then used to tie into the broader 2024 event theme of 'Human x Machine,' with the team imagining what a tree- and plant-based stage design would look like if created by AI. The resulting stage was a hybrid design featuring black steel and LEDs for the roots, plus tree trunks and real plants and foliage for the bushes and canopy. To ensure the stage was as sustainable as possible, all the plants used were replanted in local greenhouses after the show. See more: 8 Steal-Worthy Engagement Strategies From Money20/20 Europe

Fairmont Chicago was draped in shades of green via live plants and colored furnishings for the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year event, where Kehoe Designs helmed the event's design. Running with a greenery theme—Pantone's then-color of the year—the event design team incorporated appropriately colored products from the client's product line, such as green mop heads, which were used to form the oversized, makeshift weeping willow trees. Working with sister company Floral Exhibits, the team aimed to make it appear as if living plants were growing right out of the tables themselves.
